This Firethorn Berries and Birds Colored Porcelain Bowl Measures:
4-3/4"” wide x 3-5/8” high.
Holds approximately 2-3/4 cups of liquid, or 22 ounces of liquid.
This piece is created utilizing several techniques.
OUTSIDE:
This bowl was wheel-thrown using a very pale titanium yellow colored porcelain clay.
Prior to the bisque firing (Cone 04), 1945º Fahrenheit, I crafted a small "berry mold" by pushing (multiple times) a large, round ball tool into leather hard clay (damp clay; not wet, not bone dry). All I did was wait for this mold to dry, and it was ready to use. No firing needed. No special plaster mold. Just "Necessity is the Mother of Invention" type of clay mold. The small indents in the berries; the calyx, were formed with a metal screwdriver bit after the berries were attached to the bowl. Leaves were fastened after the berries, and shaped to fit into the desired space.
The next band up, towards the rim, is a band of hand drawn birds, just waiting to taste their favorite winter berries.
After the birds were drawn, rubber latex was applied to the lines.
When the rubber latex was dry, the entire band was glazed with Mayco's Satin matte glaze - Black Walnut.
The rubber latex was peeled off after the glaze dried.
The next band up, towards the rim was a design created using a very narrow detailing tape, and the negative spaces left by the tape were each glazed with three coats of Opulence's glaze, Polished Stone. Polished Stone is a glossy gray glaze.
The RIM is glazed with three coats of Mayco's Cordovan.
A deep, warm, dark red/brown. Very glossy.
There is a slight bump on the side of the rim, and I DO KNOW how it got there.
My endless quest for making the rim perfectly round, which sounds ludicrous when working with porcelain, BUT THE RIM IS ROUND, NOT OVAL!
By compressing the rim TOO HARD with a small, damp chamois, I created the lovely little bump on the side of the rim.
To bump, or Not to bump.
O.K. I DON'T LIKE the BUMP - BUT it's there, and it IS OPERATOR (my) ERROR.
There, I said it!
DARN!
Let's move to the outside, bottom of the bowl.
Little checks of green and coral.
Design was taped with very narrow detailing tape, and three coats of underglaze applied to each square, alternating two colors.
There is no clear glaze over this area, and the surface is slightly rougher than glazed areas.
INSIDE:
"A Bird's Delight" Bowl is glazed with three coats of Amaco's Flux Blossom PCF-54 on the inside.
Where the Flux Blossom overlaps the Cordovan glazed rim, it forms tiny flecks of blue and cream. Just below the blue flecks the glaze is a pale pink all the way down to the bottom.
The bottom, inside swirl is clearly visible.
RIM:
Glossy, Cordovan glaze. A deep, dark reddish brown.
Don't forget that little bump we mentioned earlier.
Wheel-thrown colored Standard 365 Porcelain
Glazed with lead-free, dinnerware safe glazes.
Fired to Cone 6 (2232º Fahrenheit).
My signature is engraved on the bottom of the bowl.
