This Forget-Me-Not and Blue Plaid Wheel-thrown Porcelain Vase Measures:
3-1/4" wide x 5-1/2" high
There is a lot of detail in this porcelain vase.
The porcelain has not been colored, as color would affect the blue glazes applied.
Blue glazes, in my opinion, look better on a white ground.
If these were opaque glazes, then colored clay would be alright, but since the glazes are transparent, and/or semi-transparent, I decided to leave the porcelain clay white, and allow the blues to shine.
OUTSIDE:
There are many techniques involved here, so we'll start from the bottom -
The first band above the footring is a band of light blue and pale blue stripes, alternating in color. The stripes were taped with a very narrow tape, and three coats of underglaze was applied to each negative area the tape created.
The checkered band was created the same way the striped band was, only rows of horizontal tape were added to the vertical rows. Three coats of underglaze to each check that was created in the negative space the taped area left.
These two bottom bands are coated with three layers of clear, glossy, lead free glaze after the tape was removed.
The largest section of plaid was also produced the same way, utilizing glazes instead of underglazes. The glazes are applied horizontally and vertically.
You can see the taped process in the last uploaded photograph.
Where two glazes overlap, it creates a third color, usually with speckles or a marbled effect. Some runnier glazes cause drips, which add interest to the pottery piece.
Next is a thin strip of glossy black glaze, on which sits the tiny sculpted Forget-Me-Not flowers. These small flowers ARE colored porcelain and are attached to the vase in its raw (greenware) state, and fired at high temperature with a clear, glossy glaze coating them. These Forget-Me-Nots are constructed out of cornflower blue colored porcelain with tiny yellow centers.
The rim is also black to set off the Forget-Me-Not flowers.
INSIDE:
Inside this vase is a glossy, pale blue glaze, and where it overlaps the black of the rim, a thin band of dark and medium blue speckles was formed in the melting process.
The swirls are subtly visible on the bottom of the inside; mostly covered in melted glaze.
RIM:
Glossy black.
Wheel-thrown Standard 365 Porcelain.
Fired to Cone 6 (2232ºFahrenheit).
Hand washing this vase is advised because of the intricate floral design.
My signature engraved on the bottom.
