This Peony Wide Rimmed Colored Porcelain Bowl Measures:
7” wide x 3-3/8” high.
This measurement includes the wide rim.
The concave interior width near the rim is 3-3/4” wide.
This wide rimmed bowl was . . . an experiment.
Usually the results of my experiments are . . . questionable.
BUT THIS BOWL is . . . NOT AN EXPERIMENT ANY LONGER.
It’s a KEEP HONING YOUR CRAFT kind of bowl.
It took a long time to complete, but I don’t remember feeling any discontent.
This wide rimmed bowl is a combination of techniques, textures and a lot of tape.
I have written an extensive blog about this wide rimmed bowl here.
OUTSIDE:
Three different textures.
Two different techniques.
Two different dark brown checks, alternating around the circumference, under the wide rim.
These checks were formed by taping with a very narrow, 1/32", detailing tape.
Each of the little squares were glazed with three coats of glaze.
These checks consist of two different colored umbers (browns):
Mayco’s Black Walnut and Opulence’s Petrified Wood.
The two colors look almost identical. You have to view near natural light to see the subtle difference. Petrified Wood is a tad bit darker with the tiniest variegated flecks.
The next band of design is the butterfly band.
Each butterfly was hand drawn.
Rubber latex applied to the drawing lines.
Glazed with two coats of Black Walnut.
Black Walnut is opaque, satin matte, and its tone is warm. It’s not harsh at all, but soft to look at.
I almost chickened out (as I did before on another vessel), and played it safe.
Disappointment would have been inevitable.
The outside bottom portion of this bowl is striped, although the stripes are so subtle against the apricot colored clay, they’re almost unnoticeable. The glaze I used for these stripes was Opulence Sandstone.
It gives the finish the look of corduroy fabric. You can feel the texture, but it’s not evident through visual observation.
INSIDE:
The inside rim of this bowl consists of seven peony flowers and three peony buds.
They are hand drawn, and the petals lined with rubber latex.
When the rubber latex dried, three coats of underglaze was applied to the negative space created with the rubber latex.
Clear glaze was brushed over the underglaze areas; three coats as well.
Just below the peonies three coats of Amaco's Flux Blossom was brushed on.
This gives the inside bottom of the bowl a very soft look as compared to the more graphic feel of the peony flowers.
The bottom, inside swirl is clearly visible under the glaze.
RIM:
Satin matte Black Walnut glaze.
Wheel-thrown colored Standard 365 Porcelain
Glazed with lead-free, dinnerware safe glazes.
Fired to Cone 6 (2232º Fahrenheit).
My signature is engraved on the bottom of the bowl.
All of our handmade pottery is either wheel-thrown or handbuilt in our North Carolina home studio.
