This Pink Colored Porcelain Engraved Spider Mum Vase Measures:

3" wide x 5-7/8" high.

ARACHNID:
any of a class (Arachnida) of arthropods comprising chiefly terrestrial invertebrates, including the spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks, and having a segmented body divided into two regions of which the anterior bears four pairs of legs but no antennae.

I did not know this.

I thought ONLY spiders were called arachnids.

There are no adorable arachnids, according to this description!

If I wanted to view a beautiful arachnid, I’d have to look at
Spider Mums (Chrysanthemum morifolium) - not really arachnids, nor actual spiders.

The long, thin, often curling petals are the defining feature, giving the flower its "spider" name.
Since my pottery focuses the "flower", it became a challenge as how to create a spider mum on a piece of pottery.
The petals are very thin, and that makes it difficult to carve without
tearing the legs - I mean, the petals off.

To draw with rubber latex before glazing would be difficult as well. The rubber latex would probably run together, closing the petals.
Mishima might work, and I’ll have to give it a try someday.

Engraving is the technique I chose because a fine line can be had with a small metal ball tool.
A celadon glaze - or a transparent glaze - darkens in lines left behind with engraving.

So there you have it.
Engraved petals with a celadon glaze to enhance the drawing lines.

The bottom portion of this vase is exposed colored porcelain clay with white, vertical underglaze lines, left without a clear glaze.
This puts emphasis on the glossy “spider” section on the top half of the vase.

Wheel-thrown Standard 365 Porcelain.
Fired to Cone 6 (2232ºFahrenheit).
My signature engraved on the bottom.
