This Handmade Wheel-thrown, Hand Drawn and Glazed Shallow Bowl
Measures:
4-5/8" wide x 1-3/8" high.
Wheel-thrown Sio-2 Lagoon Turquoise Blue Porcelain Clay.
We did not color this porcelain; it is pre-colored by the manufacturer.
This would be a very special cat lover's gift!
Whisker Friendly cat food bowl.
Cat food or water bowl.
Low sides keep cat's whiskers out of their food, and keep their sensitive whiskers from touching a deep bowl's sides.
Can also be used to accommodate jewelry, coins, or perhaps to serve a couple bonbons.
OUTSIDE:
Peony flowers are hand drawn on bisqueware, and rubber latex applied over the drawing.
Underglaze is applied, as if coloring in between the lines.
Three coats of underglaze is required for the opaque aesthetic I prefer.
After the underglaze is applied, the rubber latex is peeled off. This is the most fun, as it is like peeling off a rubber band.
Three thin coats of a lead free, dinnerware safe CLEAR is brushed on, giving the piece a glossy sheen after its fired in the hot kiln.
Beneath the peony flowers a black walnut, geometric pattern wraps around the circumference of the bowl.
This pattern was created using a very narrow detailing tape.
INSIDE:
A pale blue flux glaze was applied to the inside, catching the purple glaze on the rim, creating little speckles where the two glazes overlap.
Pale blue flecks cover the inside with a hint of light peach near the bottom rings.
Very faint blue rings are visible on the inside bottom.
RIM:
Glossy Eggplant purple.
Wheel-thrown Sio-2 Lagoon Turquoise Blue Porcelain Clay.
Glazed with lead-free, dinnerware safe glazes.
Fired to Cone 6 (2232º Fahrenheit).
I recommend washing these hand crafted pieces by hand.
My signature is engraved on the bottom of the bowl.
How it’s Made
This piece was wheel-thrown on the potter's wheel. After the piece was trimmed (footring), and allowed to dry, the bowl was fired in the kiln to Cone 04 (1945 degrees Fahrenheit).
Nine peony flowers were hand drawn and rubber latex applied over my drawing through a narrow tipped applicator on the bisqueware.
Flowers were glazed with three coats of underglaze.
Geometric design was taped using a very narrow detailing tape.
A clear, food safe, lead-free glaze applied over the completed flower composition.
The rim and inside were glazed with lead-free dinnerware safe glazes.
The bowl was fired a second time to Cone 6 (2232 degrees Fahrenheit).
All of our handmade pottery is either wheel-thrown or hand-built in our North Carolina home studio.
